Kate's Blog

Follow me if you will as I try to navigate through the ups and downs of my world.

I'm writing this blog to help me make sense of all that has happened - from my diagnosis with non-Hodgkins lymphoma while pregnant with my third child in May 2008
, through to my reflections on chaotic family life as I try to pick up the pieces of my life again.

The kids are so small, and I'm working hard to keep us all safe and to stay in remission.

Stay with me - it won't be all doom and gloom I promise!

I Hait Mum

So, another bank-holiday weekend bites the dust! What did we find ourselves doing on our extra day off work and school? Buying shoes for the kids, that's what!! I have my regular sinus thing back again which makes me feel totally totally rubbish (struggles to find polite word...) and trailing around looking for shoes to fit Ed who seems to have mysteriously impossibly unusually shaped feet, was not helping matters for me. Cue lots of shouting and tears from us all - when we got home not in the shoe-shop, although lots of furious hissing was employed there instead - and cue huge amounts of guilt from me about what an appalling parent I am. Not helped by discovering Martha's touching message for me which was on the floor of her bedroom. 'I hait mum'. Hmmm.

She later amended it to 'I love mum', but only after I'd produced the first offending note and she felt sheepish.

I hope the kids don't all end up in therapy in 20 years time expanding upon exactly why they all 'hait' mum.

Lets put it this way, if you haven't given each of them reason for at least three years worth of 'talking' you don't really care at all. The very fact of you attempting to bring them up, with maybe the odd swat on the rump, the odd timeout, missed dinner or being sent to bed will give them more than enough fuel.
While the worry about the note can be solved by making her write it out 30 times, spelling can be important and show her the trick of taping two pens together. Something I suspect will be a feature of her near future as a scholar. And something which should abate a year worth of therapy every time she thinks on who showed her the trick.

Keep it an show it to her when she's 18 and you two have a wonderful relationship. It's part of the territory and they learn about life from the bd as well as the good. You're doing a good job - it won;t be their job to tell you for many many years to come. And don't forget - she said she loved you too....

my friend's little girl wrote a note in anger when she was about 5 saying
Dear Mummy I HET you lots of love Jade.

She is now 28, beautiful and happily married with a great career in London, so don't worry!!

My kids have very narrow feet and it is SUCH a pain to shop for the two youngest. They walk out of anything that doesn't have a strap...

Anyway...

Your children love you...I know it, and you do too. Instinct? :)

My very first hate letter to my mom is saved in my baby book...I'm guessing I was 5 or so.

"Dear Mama...
I hate you.
Love, Michaele."

"Nobody told me there'd be days like these." John Lennon. I've sung that quietly to myself many times as a mother. Tomorrow is another day, Kate, a gift to start all over again. xo
